Vote

Voting is central to our democratic process. Learn about ways Maine allows people to vote.

Registering to Vote

Maine citizens 18 and older with a principal residence in Maine can register to vote. People with felony convictions may vote. You can register in three ways:

  • In person at your town office or city hall
  • By mailing a registration card to your town office, city hall, or the Secretary of State's Office
  • At your polling place on Election Day

Accepted ID includes a driver's license, a Maine State ID, the last four digits of your Social Security number, or a bank statement or bill showing your name and address. There is no cutoff for in-person registration before Election Day.

Voting in Maine

Early and absentee voting

No reason is needed to vote absentee or early. You can request a ballot in person, online (request one here), by mailing in a printed form, or by phone to your city clerk or town office.

Ballots become available 30 days before each election. Requests are accepted from three months before an election through close of business on the Thursday before Election Day. Sign the back of the ballot envelope or your vote won't count.

Mailed ballots must reach the City Clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Mail yours by the Friday before at the latest.

Election Day

Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Use the state's Maine Voter Information Service to find your ward, precinct, polling location, districts, officials and sample ballots.

Always confirm details with your town or city clerk or the Secretary of State's office.
